Cycle Touring Malaysia - Johor Bahru to Kota Tinggi
It’s 5:30am local time and we’re about to leave Johor Bahra (JB to the locals) and head up to Kota Tinggi. It’s only 42km away but we can’t go any further today because the next town after that is another 91km, so tomorrow will be a big day.
JB is a strange town, from a distance it looks like a modern city, but up close it’s like something from a post-apocalyptic movie. We checked out a few hotels that looked fine on the outside but inside looked like they’d been abandoned and then inhabited by homeless people. The other weird thing is that there doesn’t seem to be enough people around for a city this size, the streets feel too quiet which adds to the feeling that it’s the shell of a city that used to be.
Not surprisingly there aren’t any other tourists around, we’ve only spotted 2 other westerners since we got here. The vibe of the place isn’t as friendly as Singapore, a lot of the locals just stare at us with a confused look on their face that seems to say “what are you doing here??”.
Overall an interesting experience but not a place we’ll be coming back to anytime soon.
