Our Travel Vlogging Gear for The Big Lap of Australia
We recently completed a 35,000km motorcycle adventure around Australia (The Big Lap) and filmed the whole journey to share on YouTube.
A common question we get is what gear do we use to film our travel vlogs?
So below is a list of all our travel vlogging equipment.
GoPro Action Cameras
Most of the footage for our travel vlog is filmed with the following four GoPro Hero 9 action cameras:
Story Cam
Our main 'story cam' is mounted on a Joby GorillaPod 3K Tripod and is fitted with a GoPro Media Mod for improved audio.
Helmet Cams
Two helmet cameras for POV riding shots. One mounted with a ProShot helmet mount and the other with a GoPro chin mount.
Both do a good job. We ordered the ProShot first but it took about three months to deliver from the US.
Jaws Cam
We have a GoPro Jaws Flex Clamp mounted camera for lots of different dynamic angles from the bike (e.g. handlebar, front wheel, rear view etc), and anywhere else we can think of putting it to get creative shots.
DJI Pocket 2 Mini Gimbal Camera
The DJI Pocket 2 is a tiny gimbal allows us to film super steady shots that wouldn't be possible otherwise, it's different to GoPro image stabilization which is great for smoothing out bumps and vibrations, whereas the gimbal smooths out bigger movements like turning or panning up and down, it's most noticeable when speed ramping footage.
DJI Mavic Air 2 Drone
Our Drone 'Roger' is a DJI Mavic Air 2, we bought him with the Fly More Combo that includes three batteries instead of one plus a few other bits and pieces.
We also got the DJI Smart Controller to make it quick and easy to get the drone in the air without fiddling with cables to hook up a phone, and it means we're not draining a phone battery while flying.
Phone Cameras
Most smart phones these days have awesome cameras, we use an iPhone 11 and Huawei P30 Pro for taking still shots and occasionally as backup video cameras when we want to film a short clip and don't have a GoPro within reach.
